## Emplacement
A not-to-be-missed destination, La Rochelle has plenty to charm visitors. A port city par excellence with its four harbours, the Cité Blanche captivates all those who set eyes on the sun-drenched white stone in which its buildings are constructed. The omnipresent ocean is the symbol of the city, wafting its spray into the nostrils of visitors. The old stones also have their say in this landscape bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, where low-lying coasts, sheer cliffs and sandy coasts alternate. International trade has fostered a unique architectural mix, with a variety of influences from across the seas. Not far from the shore, the islands of Ré, Oléron and Aix form a natural barrier, preventing the ocean swell from disturbing the calm of the thousand-year-old city. Originally a fishing village founded in the Xᵉ century, it took just two millennia for it to become a major port. Its dominance in maritime trade lasted until the 15th century. Its rebellious spirit was not to the King's taste, and it folded under Richelieu's siege in the 16th century. Despite losing its independence, La Rochelle has continued to grow economically over the centuries, thanks to its proximity to the ocean, which remains at the heart of maritime trade.
