Camping trip 2012 - we were heading north and were in need of a break. Decided to take the next rest sign exit. Never had heard of Karuah before. The road deserted with only farmland on either side and a scattering of houses. Seemed like forever off the motorway. All of a sudden, we see the township. What a find! Situated on the Karuah river - this little township is famous for its oysters and its timber, celebrating it with a festival each October. There is an info centre and attached to it is a recycled shop called 'The Boat Shed' filled with many treasures which my hubby and I remember from our childhood. There is also the best fish and chip shop we have been to in NSW. Fresh fish off the trawlers from the mornings fishing trip. The owners are not the happiest people but that what makes this even more special as the food is unbelievable. There is a scattering of other town shops with a church who opens its op shop doors on Fridays and Saturdays and is run by the volunteers. Down by the river is a playground for the kids to have a run about. Its quiet. Its not caught up in the tourist trade. A small town with its own identity. We make this detour every year now. I recommend anyone to check out this quaint little town.
