This was our second visit. We love being in the mountains visiting family but also being fifteen minutes or less from all the modern conveniences. Everything in the house was well maintained and comfy. Thong Thai and Sushi was a great find only 5 minutes away.
Our stay was perfect for our family. The house has had a few updates. The kitchen area is spacious. The living room had ample seating for a family of four. The heaters worked well to keep the rooms warm. Beds were comfortable. The house is close to town and plenty of things to do with family and friends. Check in and out process was easy. The listing is spot on with turning into the property from the left is the best way to get into the driveway.
Great location and host! We went at end of October and the house was cozy and heated nicely. Had all the things you would need. The only improvement I would suggest is garbage removal at no cost.

Lock box combination did not work. It was listed For Sale and we were told maybe the realtor had changed the combination. VBRO agent called daughter who was able to unlock the back door (with difficulty).Spider webs all over the place, inside and out. House had obviously not been used in a while. We chose not to stay and was refunded our money.
This place is really cute! Everything we needed for our short stay. This house is a five-minute drive to downtown. W. Jefferson. The heating/cooling units are different than what we’ve seen; a provided operational manual might be helpful for others; however, the owner was great at responding with help for us!!!! Great customer service along with a very clean, tidy and well organized home. We will be back for sure! 💗
I’m giving you 4 stars because I don’t want to hurt your business, but I would give it a 2 or 3. Here is what I suggest for the property:
- No replacement garbage bags
- Asked us to wash towels, but no laundry detergent. We weren’t told to bring any.
- Asked us to start dishwasher, but no detergent
- Hand soap needed in kitchen
- Rugs slide -- falling hazard
- Bathtub slippery
- Bathroom had conditioner, soap, and lotion, but no shampoo
- No coffee table. If people sit in the middle or end of sofa, they have nowhere to place their drinks.
- Knives are really dull. Someone is going to cut themselves.
- Nowhere for 4 people to eat together. - Can't have conversation with the way the furniture arranged, but we were asked to not move the furniture.
- Any decorations were put in a corner and in no way arranged.
- Some of the furniture is in rough shape.

Most likely this will be my last VRBO rental
After reading previous reviews and the posted pictures, I am not sure what may have changed with this property, but it was obvious something has. Here are some suggestions to get back on track, 1) clean the front porch it is obviously dirty (I cleaned the front mat to not bring that dirt into the home), 2) power wash the exterior of the home, 3) clean or replace the filthy couch, 4) level the side table furniture which was comical to place items on due to the bizarre slope, 5) add proper trim to the window A/C to keep the bugs out instead of aluminum foil, 6) I had to fix the toilet seat (it would be obvious if it was cleaned), 7) clean the 5 dead and 1 live spider(s) from the supplied pet bowls inside the home before guests arrive (took care of that for you also), 8) clean the kitchen floor as I killed a spider with a wet paper towel and found it to be dirty, 9) repair the broken support member on the wooden chair, 10) cut the grass (I took the garbage with me rather than push my way through the wet high grass), 11) clean the filters in each electric room heater, 12) the glue let go on the kitchen countertop lifting the formica, 13) clean the chairs on the front porch (they were unusable and claimed by insects spinning webs), 14) provide the correct Wi-Fi access information (wrong in the email). Thank you for providing a tip envelope for housekeeping but respectfully, I chose not to use it. On a positive note, the appliances were clean, and the bed was comfortable.
We had a wonderful weekend getaway. Everything was neat and as listed. Paul and Margaret were quick to respond when needed. Such a cute little home and perfect for a weekend away.
Paul was very good in communicating with us before, and during our stay. There is a $25 per bag trash fee we didn’t know about. It’s very dark if you come at night so have a good flashlight. Otherwise very clean, good accommodations. Well equipped for what we needed for the weekend. I’d stay again if I had a wedding to go to in that area. Very well priced and nice secluded area.
We had a wonderful weekend at this cute little house in Jefferson! It was exactly as described and very clean. I would recommend this place for anyone visiting the area.
It was a wonderful house. Clean and comfortable. Easy to get to and in a great neighborhood. Would definitely recommend and we will be staying here again in the future.
Close enough to town but off the beaten path. We really enjoyed relaxing on the porch. There was always a cool breeze coming off Mount Jefferson. A few minutes drive and you’re in the town of West Jefferson. Hillbilly Grill and Home Town Diner were great for breakfast and lunch. Plaza Del Sol is just up the road and their food is good and the price was great! Ashe county museum is a gem. If you go be sure to check out the heirloom seed garden behind it. You can go to the library in town and pick up free seeds harvested from that garden to grow yourself. House is clean and a bottle of wine and snacks were greatly appreciated! Paul is quick to respond to texts. Will definitely stay here next time we visit the area.
We loved our 3 week stay at Barrett Place!! It has all the amenities of home and so close to everything. We will definitely recommend this rental to all of our family and friends that will be visiting! The hosts are very responsive and made the entire stay amazing!! Thank you Paul and Margaret

We loved our stay here. House is adorable, clean, private and tastefully updated- comfortable beds, washer/dryer and all we needed. Have been coming to the area for 40 years. Convenient to hiking, river sports as well as downtown WJ dining and shops. Cant wait to come back and stay longer next time!
