Unkempt property, host canceled last minute

The experience with this host was a nightmare. We had family travel in from several other states and were left scrambling to find a hotel because the host canceled the booking at 12:21pm on the day of arrival, while I was on the phone with him trying to get the key code! He claimed he had no reservations on his end but the property was reserved and paid over 2 months prior with confirmations from VRBO. The property didn't look maintained, exterior trash bins were overflowing and the yard was not kept, so maybe it was a good thing we had to go to a hotel.
