Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve has six miles of hiking trails through its varied terrain, towering sandstone cliffs, big leaf magnolias, eastern hemlock, sweet gum, birch, beech, mountain laurel, Virginia pine and oak.

The preserve has many native orchids, a diverse spring flora as well as its namesake lake.
