We planned this vacation for 18 months and we booked and paid for this apartment on VRBO 8 months before our stay. The area was familiar to us from having grown up there. Location of apartment was 5 star. However, communication from the host was non-existent. VRBO tried communicating with the host on our behalf but had no response. The manager replied to one or two messages I sent to her on a competitor’s platform (since they were not responding on VRBO) and she assured us that we had a reservation. We saw that she read some of our other messages but she never gave us a reply. When we arrived to Ipswich from Seattle, we read an email from the manager canceling our stay just one hour before we arrived at the entrance to the building. An incredulous reason was given. No one was there to offer an explanation. We were tired, stranded and in shock. VRBO helped us find temporary accommodation and worked to refund us. The host listed the official reason for cancellation as ‘guest minimum age’ not met even though we are in our 60’s. This host was dishonest, non-communicative and he ruined the beginning of our trip of a lifetime experience. We are beyond disappointed! A shout out to VRBO though for helping 3 weary stranded travelers find a temporary place to stay.
