The Neighborhood:
Ten minutes by car from Te Anau township, Whitestone Retreat 2 by Tiny Away sits right at Fiordland National Park’s edge. Start your day with a short drive to the glowworm-lit Te Ana‑au Caves, part of the Te Anau Glowworm Caves experience, then loop back past the teal lakeshore to the Bird Sanctuary at Punanga Manu.
Stretch your legs along Rainbow Reach tracks or dip into lakeside cafés in town. Head fifteen minutes south for Lake Manapouri, born from ice‑age carving and watched over by cathedral‑edged peaks. That drive delivers a quieter limb of the park, a checkpoint between two deep-lake giants. Manapōuri spills into Doubtful Sound excursions or lets you linger in tiny cafés and a two‑bookshop village.
Fiordland National Park looms: dark valleys, saltwater fiords inland, moss‑clad forest edges at the roads. Roll into the next town with muddy boots or glow‑bug tales. All this sits in the shadow of the great Fiordland expanse, the world heritage park that surrounds mountains, glacier-sculpted valleys, and rare wildlife.
