"Beautiful location near Volcanoes National Park and Volcano Village. Quiet, rain-forest grounds with fiddleheads, ferns, anthurium on walking path to hot tub. I was traveling with my hula sister and we wanted to watch the Merrie Monarch Festival on TV. The television was old with poor reception. I tried to contact the host through VRBO but couldn't get through. Called the VRBO help line and they cut me off so we watched on my computer instead. Glad I had it with me! Otherwise a pleasant stay."

The best was turning on the heater in the early morning to dry the air when the temp was cool enough. No message before arrival and no phone answer. "While the room is cute and we enjoyed the view of the forest, it did not compensate for the deficiencies. The cleaning fee we were charged is hard to accept considering the conditions. The room smelled of cigarette smoke immediately upon entering the unit when we got there on Friday afternoon around 4:15-4:30pm. The floor had dirt and dust and bathroom mirror had previous occupants toothpaste spittle on it. Then we went to the jacuzzi: cover is falling apart, not connected to the removal bar....

"This is a beautiful, large house designed and constructed in the 1930s for a wealthy Hilo family. The main interiors are dark wood, with original custom bannisters and similar craftsmanship, and the furnishings are period-correct. The present owners have upgraded in various ways, including adding in-room air conditioning (we didn't need, but it was nice to have the option), retrofitted bathrooms, kitchen, wiring, and similar. "Location and ocean view was FANTASTIC. While it's not a 5-star/ $1000 per night hotel, it has everything you would need/ expect from an excellent beach house. We were only a group of 2, but the house easily could accommodate 6 people. Great jumping off point to see sites on this side of the island (Hilo, Volcano, towns that existed a few years ago but then were taken by lava).
