Geghard (Armenian: meaning "spear") is a medieval monastery in the Kotayk province of Armenia, being partially carved out of the adjacent mountain, surrounded by cliffs. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
'As some of the monastery churches are dug out of the cliff rocks and others are simply parts of the neighbouring caves, the sight and energy of the place are extraordinary, completed by the opera concerts sometimes held inside Geghard or by the freestanding khachkars.'
