Gottweig Abbey was established in the 11th century. It has had monks onsite for over 900 years, longer than any other Abbey or monastery in Europe. Most of the structures burnt to the ground in the 18th century, so a majority of the buildings are a mere 300 years old. The Abbey library contains an outstanding collection of both print volumes and drawings, many of which have now been digitized through a partnership with Danube University-Krems. While the heavy fog that often rolls off the Danube makes the scene look pretty gothic, the cathedral is actually baroque.

"Pros: Gastgeber war sehr freundlich. Schöner privater Bereich zum entspannen. Mega Außenbett. Cons: Grundsätzlich waren wir sehr zufrieden. Jedoch bin ich der Meinung, dass für so viel Geld alles stimmen sollte. So waren unschöne Löcher in den Wänden, in denen Insekten hausten und ziemlich alles an Geschirr stark verschmutzt."

"Our group only had 1 night here. The stay was pretty comfortable, although it was quite difficult sharing 1 bathroom amongst 5 adults, but we managed. Space was sufficient for us and overall stay was comfortable. Only thing was that floor of the room was like stone/concrete, which didn’t seem comfortable to walk around barefooted. Thankfully we had slippers. There is no free parking onsite, but there is street side parking."
