Great place for a weekend getaway!

We had a fantastic time staying at "off the grid." The property is gorgeous, the house has everything that would could ask for, it's just a great place to go and relax, hike a bit, watch some cows, make s'mores; just get away from it all.

Great cabin

Property owner gave very good directions especially since the property is off the beaten path. The place was exactly what we needed and we were very comfortable. Wouldn’t hesitate to rent again!

Peaceful homestead on the hill

The home and property are excellent for a quiet stay. The views are spectacular and the home is cozy fine for up to 6 folks. The large property and the backyard fire pit (with firewood) make it even better. We had a relaxing time mostly just enjoying the scenery and company.

Marvelous solitude

A well equipped and restful oasis. Perfectly placed away from the road (which is quiet anyhow) and with truly panoramic views. Host was informative, timely, helpful. Overall, Highland County is a hidden gem.

Peaceful and beautiful

We loved our mini vacation here. It was quiet and beautiful. We spent most of our time on the back porch reading and relaxing, watching the birds while the cows watched us and our dog. Beds were comfortable. The fire pit was great too. We hope to come back next spring.

Friends Getaway

We enjoyed our stay at Seldom Seen cabin. Communication with the owner was excellent. The location is ideal. We had everything we needed in the kitchen to cook our meals. The beds were comfy. We enjoyed the fire ring behind the cabin and loved sitting on the front porch and watching the cows graze.

Wonderful!

A snowy, wet weekend nestled away with family and the maple festival. This cabin was perfect! Big fireplace, lots of wood, kitchen stocked with seasonings and condiments and all the kitchen utensils you could want! Steve was a great host, providing us with step by step directions to this secluded paradise. We will definitely come back!

Quiet home in the mountains

Stayed here with a few friends to do some hiking during the day and star gazing at night. Very quiet place. No noise or light pollution here! Spectacular views from the front porch. Cows roam around the property (they didn't bother us). Cabin had everything we needed.

Awesome Weekend Stay

This property is set in a nice background and has a wonderful view. The owner was great at communicating regarding all directions and info about the location. The house is well stocked and very clean. The kids had a great time making smores every night and counting stars on the clear evenings. They loved it when the cows would pass by or when they were crossing our path when driving. Thanks Steve for a wonderful stay.

Absolute Seclusion

One of the best rental properties we’ve stayed at - everything was amazing. It is not easy to get to and that is part of the charm. At night, there is not one light to be seen in the world save for the stars. Steve was extremely responsive and helpful when we needed him. We hope to return for a longer stay very soon.

Wonderful escape

We had the best time visiting Steve's home. It comfortably slept all 6 of us and there was plenty of space in the common area to hang out. We appreciated all of the kitchen utensils and necessities! Gorgeous views and very remote. We did not have any cell service, but the WiFi was enough for 1 or 2 of us to connect at a time if needed. We definitely saw this as a plus though -- we could truly relax! Steve also provided clear turn-by-turn directions so we easily found our way to the house, even at night. We would definitely recommend this property and we hope to return!

Get away from the rat race

We had a wonderful time at this home escaping from the everyday stresses. The owner, Steve, could not have been more helpful and easy to reach with any question. We and our two Boxers loved the seclusion and running free. The TV and wifi were just enough connection to the outside world. The home had everything we needed and more - just bring your own food but there are plenty of pans, utensils, glasses, etc. We really couldn't recommend the home and host more. If this is the experience you are looking for, don't hesitate to book. We hope to be back soon!

Beauty and Peace

This is a very comfortable and well-appointed cabin in a gorgeous spot in a remote and lovely area of Highland County. The view is beautiful and you cannot see another house or hear a car. There is just bird song and open pastures and woods. There is a great fireplace, comfortable furniture and beds and everything you could need for a family get-away. This would be perfect for children as it is completely safe and you could let the kids run wild, a rare experience for young ones these days. The skies are dark at night and you can actually see the stars. It's perfect!

Peace on Earth

My wife and i were looking for a place to disconnect from the rest of the world - we found it here. We loved the fact that we did not see another person or vehicle the entire time we were here. The best part was if we did not connect to WiFi- we had no cell service, so we finally found a place to disconnect. The cabin was wonderful, it had all you needed. Clean and comfortable. The property was wonderful and the views were stunning. We explored all over the mountain and we really hated to leave. So if you are looking for a place to disconnect, rest, explore outside, enjoy breath taking views- look no further. Looking forward to visiting again.

Look no further if you are looking for serenity! The property is an oasis!

The beautiful views and the remote location created a relaxing vacation for my family. We enjoyed the sound of the birds, the mooing if the cows, the hummingbirds at the porch feeders. We hiked the vast property, sharing the path with the many docile cows along the way. We enjoyed the fire pit, the cornhole, and the horseshoes that the owner provided. The home is comfortable and very clean. Steve the owner was very responsive to questions and full of information regarding events in the area. This property has it all! If you are looking for an escape from the stress of life in the city. Book this property .... it will restore your soul!

Private Getaway

This was our second time staying at the cabin with our friends, and we will definitely be going back again. The cabin isn't "fancy" or "luxurious," but you have everything you need for a great time away. What it does have is a million dollar view. It's just you, the cabin, and nature within site. And the kitchen is very well stocked with just about any kind of cooking utensil you could possibly need. The owner is very generous in stocking the firewood supply for the beautiful stone fireplace in the cabin and the fire pit outside. We especially appreciated that our dog could come on the trip with us. We live in a townhome community, and she doesn't get a lot of chance to run and play--just leashed walks. She absolutely loves coming to this cabin as she can run as long as she likes. She would give this place a 10+ for dogs!

Peacful and Relaxing

We had a great time recharging at Seldom Seen Farm. The accomodations were clean and had everything you needed to prepare meals. The wifi was slow, as stated, but enough for college guys to get some work completed. I never left the property, just wanted to enjoy the tranquility and serenity of the area. The guys left and went to Bull Pasture for some fly fishing and had a great time. We all hiked around the property everyday. We enjoyed the cool nights with beautiful stars. Deer were mostly out the backdoor every morning, while the cows were grazing on the hill out the front window. We arrived in/on the back end of a large rainfall. We had 4wheel and made it just fine all the way up the driveway. Our son's, 2 wheel drive suburban could not make it all the way up and he just parked further down ( 300 meters or so) in an old driveway. Once the driveway dried out, he was just fine to get up the hill. We would definitely come back!

A very special mountain retreat

We absolutely love this gorgeous mountain setting....from the beautiful mountain road switchbacks to the lovely expansive views from the cabin. The cabin is very comfortable and has everything a family might need for accommodations. We enjoyed just sitting on the porch, taking in nature, including the various calls and sounds of the cows in the surrounding pastures. There were two little fledgling swallows in a nest above the porch, so we were able to watch the parents' activity to feed them. They seemed almost ready to fly, and sure enough, by the morning we left they were no longer there! We also enjoyed the hummingbirds at the various feeders on the porch. We especially loved the trail that we followed from the cabin up into the woods. Good exercise!!! Our 3 dogs were very much enamored with the cows that would pass through during the day. We have been to many VRBO cabins, but have never found one that met our desire for a remote location as well as this one did. Steve is a very responsive owner. We were so appreciative of his desire to provide help and guidance regarding any questions we had about our trip. We look forward to coming back, and would really love to see this place in the fall. Should be so spectacular!!!

Hidden Treasure

If you want seclusion and quiet (if you don't mind the Moo-ing of a lot of cattle) you'll love this property. No close neighbors (except the cows) and the nearest store is almost 10 miles away. Don't think that you are just going to hop in the car and go to "town" for a fancy meal or the Wal-Mart. The nearest Wal-Mart is about an hour's drive one way. (not necessarily a bad thing).Very comfortable cabin. It was built around 2005 so it is showing a little bit of wear but nothing bad. Satelitte TV was adequate, Wi-Fi (thru the satellite system) was good enough for email etc. and was the only way you could use your cell phone. Cell phone coverage in the immediate area was spotty to non-existence. Steve was always available via text and replied promptly. At first we were a little unsettled by the long rough driveway and remoteness but soon adapted and had a very pleasant stay. My oldest Son (50 years old) and his daughter really loved the place and weren't in a hurry to leave. Yes there are a lot of cattle around but don't let that concern you. Thanks Steve for a great stayl

Mountain Paradise

My Husband and I and our 4 sons spent 5 nights at "Off the Grid" and loved it. The boys are already wanting to return in the winter. This piece of property is just beautiful. It is truly "Off the Grid." The view from every window is spectacular, and sitting on the front porch is magical. All you see and hear is God's creation. No houses, no roads, no noise from humans. You only hear the water nearby and all the song birds. It is very peaceful! We saw so many birds and deer. We were just immersed in nature. The house is very comfortable! I didn't want to leave! A few things to consider if you are thinking of renting this property: the driveway is a long grass and dirt track, which when wet was tough for our van to get up; our tires did a lot of spinning, and the van was quite muddy when we left. It is old so, we didn't care, but don't bring your luxury car. Also, McDowell is a very small town. The nearest town of any size is an hour away, and you have to drive a mountainous road to get there, but it is a really nice town. We came up to see Shenandoah National Park, and some of the sites in the area, so we did a lot of driving. For us, it was worth it. We loved staying on this beautiful piece of property!

Respite from the heat and humidity of Richmond, central Virginia

Steve was incredibly helpful in every regard. He warned us that the directions might be hard to follow. Apart from us overshooting the entrance, from Seldom Seen Road, the directions could not have made the trip any easier. We did have a problem with the cows for whom the grass within the fence around the home was indeed much greener than that without. The cows did provide an interesting diversion for the dogs. Steve responded to all our texts very quickly and arranged for fence repair work to be done early on Sunday morning. The weather was just what the doctor ordered with beautifully cool nights that allowed us to open the windows and have some of the most restful nights of this summer. The home was very clean and we really didn’t need to bring anything except our clothes and food. The location is very isolated and restful which is exactly what we were hoping for. The night sky was beautifully clear with the absence of light pollution. We saw a few deer in the distance and numerous birds, including numerous barn swallows that were nesting in the eaves of the covered porch, hummingbirds that were extremely appreciative of their feeding stations being refilled, mourning doves, blue birds, robins, indigo buntings, goldfinches, peewees and others. We had several enjoyable walks through the woods and back and forth to the main road, which was lined on both sides with masses of wildflowers which, in turn, attracted bees and butterflies .

A Matter of Timing

Steve was always quick to reply to our texts and would check on us occasionally to see how we were doing. The home was great and well equipped with utensils. The whole house fan cools the home down very quickly at night. The only sounds from the industrial world were the sounds of an occasional airplane. The stars on the clear nights were great as there are no nearby towns. We had great fun hiking and our collie loved being off leash. Our favorite spot in the morning and evening was sitting on the porch watching nature and especially the hummingbirds which we made nectar by mixing ¼ cup white sugar into 1cup of boiling water; more came each day. The overall stay was great; 5 STARS! What caused a 4 star rating was our particular stay (not meaning it would happen to everyone). The home sits in the middle of open range ranches; meaning cattle have more freedom of movement. To get to the house you are driving on trails through cattle pastures. This is why sometimes a 4 wheel drive vehicle in winter or heavy rains causing mud is necessary. We had no problem going through the pasture to the home (about a ½ mile total) until we got to the red gate which is located in a lower area. To open the gate during the heavy rain, we had to walk through mud and manure. You want to bring rubber boots for those rainy days; when dry you can pick your way around the manure. The cabin has a wooden fence around it to keep the cattle out, but unfortunately it is made with wooden boards on posts which are no match for Black Angus and they had gotten inside the area. Thus there were cow plops all around the cabin which prevented us from doing games and the necessity of having a flashlight when going out at night. Steve was quick to apologize for the inconvenience and had a neighbor (owner of the cattle) come up that day to nail up the boards. The cattle wander throughout the acreage so some days you may see cattle at a distance, no cattle, or in particular one day surrounding the house and pushing off the boards. There were many young bulls in the herd that were very curious about us, and in particular, our collie that looks like a wolf. So with the bulls pushing on the boards to get a closer look and the mother cows sometimes charging at the dog seeing a perceived threat, the herd surrounded the home and we were uncomfortable trying to get to the SUV so we stayed inside that day. Most will not have these problems. It was just a matter of bad timing; but be prepared...

Another Fantastic Stay

This was our second time visiting this cabin and loved it just as much as the first. It truly gives you a secluded and peaceful time out from normal life, while providing all amenities one could need. Our dogs were so excited when we wound our way up the driveway - I think they actually remembered it from last year. We've already booked another stay next year and are counting down the days. Highly recommend to anyone considering a stay.

Great Getaway

This cabin isn't luxurious or fancy, but it is the perfect getaway to unwind. It has a million dollar view and is very private. The cabin is well equipped and has all the kitchen equipment you would need. Also, the owner provides a great supply of firewood for the beautiful stone fireplace inside as well as the fire pit outside. We had a great time enjoying some outdoor time, and our dog loved it!
