The village of Čičmany is situated in Strážovské vrchy, approximately half way between Trenčín and Žílina. This village was famous for embroidery of traditional folk costumes, which later grew into the intricate painting of similar designs on the wooden houses. Destroyed by fire in 1921, the village was rebuilt, only to be destroyed again during WWII. Rebuilt for a second time with state aid, the village was the first in the world to be declared a ‘Reserve of Folk Architecture’. Not the easiest place to get to. A bus from Žilina (via Rajec), or do as I did, and hike there from the village of Zliechov. The famous Cesta hrdinov SNP hiking trail passes through the village. #architecture #hiddengem #hiking
