My first impression upon arriving in Sicily wasn't the best, but after seeing many other towns, on my second visit I liked Catania much more. It's not jammed with tourists, has some beautiful architecture, lots of good food, and it's near Mt. Etna.

I really had no expectations of the city and was delighted by the nearby attractions. The Duomo is spectacular as is the Elephant fountain located nearby. I visited Ursino Castle, the Opera House and a few churches all nearby.

Catania is a diamond in the rough. It's a beautiful, baroque walking city with charming people and delicious food and drink (try the seltz limone e sale). It could also use a good scrubbing.

Catania is a bit scruffy on the outside but when you get inside it is truly beautiful and has such an interesting history I wish I'd had more time to explore it. The people that are extremely kind and I enjoyed my 10 days there enormously

Avoid using taxis as they are a rip off. Otherwise it is an excellent value location with plenty to see in and around the area. There is a cheap bus service which picks up outside arrivals and drops off in a number of locations around the city centre

Much cleaner city than Palermo, less traffic congestion but if you drive, be sure to start your travels after 9.30am. The excursion to Etna is a must. Not much to see artistically in town but so many nearby areas to visit.

"Outstanding hotel. Located walking distance to all of the sights, the hotel really helped make our first trip to Catania one to remember. They upgraded our room, provided us with directions and dining recommendations. When we wanted to see a teatro du pupi they helped arrange a reservation on a local show down the street. The room was spacious and art deco with a patio. Breakfast was delicious and they made eggs and coffee upon request. Highly recommend! "
