"A stranger is a friend
you haven't met yet "...
"A stranger is a friend
that you don't know yet ... "
Irish saying
The Calla School House was built over 100 years ago and served as a village school in Ballyconneely until the 1970s. Then the house was expanded and used privately; bought, refurbished and completely renovated by us in 2013, taking into account the old structures.
The location of the house on the 'Wild Atlantic Way' is unique: right on the coast, framed by the 'bog', (moor), a lake and mountains: pure Connemara! Nearby Clifden, Connemara’s capital with many restaurants and shopping, and Roundstone, one of the prettiest coastal towns in Ireland.
The coast offers many of the most beautiful beaches of Connemara with different characters in the surrounding area. Calla Beach can be reached on foot in 10 minutes. Our attraction: hike to the uninhabited small island (Inis Stavros) at low tide :)
The house has 3 bedrooms, 1 living and dining room, a large kitchen, 1 bathroom with shower and two sinks. The glazed veranda offers incomparable views over Maumeen Lake, in which the sky is reflected, on the moor, in which sheep and horses graze, and on the mountain range of the Twelve Bens.
The house is equipped with a new gas central heating / hot water, the consumption of which can be individually controlled with a timer.
The energy costs (minus the first € 10.00) will be charged separately after meter reading and deducted from the deposit after departure.
The house is surrounded by a garden of about 2000 square meters, which has various terraces with seating and small tables. There is also a picnic table. In the so-called "Swimming pool"
can be sheltered from the wind with a view of the mountains and Maumeen Lake!
Let us speak to one of our guests:
".... Calla Old School House is not really a holiday home. Rather, it is a home that is borrowed from the owner for a week or more. And it also feels like being at home. The drawers are full of useful things, scotch tape, writing utensils, sewing tools, tools, hand mixers, baking dishes etc. The house offers plenty of space: a large living room, dining room and kitchen, bathroom, three bedrooms and a winter garden. In addition, it is extremely tasteful and furnished with great attention to detail. Not to forget the beautiful garden, which even has a seat and garden furniture, is an absolute rarity for Ireland, since gravel places around the house actually dominate here. Everything corresponds to German standards, dishwasher, coffee machine, central heating, warm water etc. Not to forget the wonderful little details such as. B. the electric blanket in the master bedroom. We also enjoyed the fireplace, although we still haven't figured out how to make peat briquettes burn. With us they just smoldered. We enjoyed living, reading, cooking, sitting in the garden in the sun, watching the sunset, eating in the winter garden, collecting shells on the beach, visiting the island at low tide and listening to the wind. Anyone who misses the Internet here can only be a teenage addict - like our son. But even he had to admit that the house is just great ..... "
