About this property
Superb 19th C. Farmhouse in extensive grounds, near Pyrenées, Pau and Lourdes
Visit the spectacular Pyrenees for a skiing break, or just to enjoy the winter sunshine. Long winter lets now available at reduced rates. Contact us for details.
This spacious and lovingly restored former farmhouse is located in the quiet village of Caixon in the Hautes Pyrenées. It is the perfect base for a multi-activity holiday or just to get away from it all and soak up the sunshine. The house has 4 bedrooms and can sleep up to 8. Whether your holiday plans include hiking in the Pyrenees, visiting the historic towns of Pau, Lourdes, Tarbes and Auch, gourmet dining, or just relaxing in the 2000+ hours of sunshine a year that this region is famous for, it’s the perfect place to be.
The house dates back to around 1830 and boasts original and character features such as exposed beams and even the original bread oven. It is set in private and secluded grounds. There is a terrace running along the entire length of the front of the house which, having a southerly aspect, catches the sun for most of the day. On the west side of the house there is a large covered patio, perfect for escaping the sun during the heat of the day, or catching the last rays in the evening. Next to the patio is also a small courtyard with a barbecue. There is plenty of storage space for bikes, canoes etc.
There are also extensive lawns and an orchard. Plenty of places to sit in the sun, or in the shade!
The accommodation is very flexible. The ground floor on its own would make an ideal apartment for a couple, comprising huge open plan living/dining room, kitchen, utility and bedroom with en-suite bathroom.
Upstairs there is a WC and shower room and a further 3 bedrooms, two with double beds and one with two single beds. There is eco-friendly heat pump central heating system and woodburning stove to keep the house warm in winter, and massive thick stone walls which keep it cool in summer. Unlike much of the self catering accommodation available in France, Au Palouque is a not an annex to another house, or one of several rental units, but is detached farmhouse situated in its own secluded grounds. If you decide to stay at Au Palouque, then the house and grounds of about half an acre, will be yours and yours alone for the duration of your stay. No fighting for parking spaces or to get the best chairs on the patio!

As part of our motorbike tour we stayed at this property for 6 nights and weren't disappointed. The Gite was absolutely beautiful and well equipped. The downstairs area consisted of 2 settees where we could sit during the evening together. The English TV was useful to keep up with news at home. The kitchen had everything you could ever need and the outside bar- be- cue was just right. The weather wasn't as good as it should have been for August so we didn't get chance to use the outdoor seating area very much.( Many of use were bitten so take plenty of antihistamine cream) All of the beds were exceptionally comfortable and had enough linen and towels for the week.. The area is very quiet and transport is needed to get to the nearest town for supplies. Thank you Ian for your great hospitality. I would highly recommend the property for family and friends to stay.
Charming and comfortable house, nicely renovated and short drive to shops and supermarkets.
Our family of 5 adults stayed for 2 weeks. The house was a great size for us and we spent lots of time in the gardens and terrace area. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all very clean and there were lots of towels and linens. The bbq was a great asset once we had figured out how it worked and cleaned it up. A car is a must for getting to the supermarket and shops. Tarbes is a half hour drive. We drove into the mountains for a couple of walks (2hrs each way). Enjoyed the market in nearby Vic. Unfortunately the guest information folder was very out of date but we managed to get up to date info while out and about. It was very hot during our stay so we had to take care to keep shutters closed to keep the rooms cool and the septic tank smell was a bit restricting at times. The World Cup football was on during our stay so it was disappointing when the cable tv stopped working, however we managed to use the wi fi to watch on our laptop.
Despite the above we had a great fortnight overall!

Trip to visit Lourdes with family
Being home again already for one week, after we had a short stay at Caixon, we want to let you know that we had a wonderful time and an enjoy full stay at your holiday home in Caixon. What a nice and well organised and neatly home you have their.
As specially my mother in law, who had a special wish to visit Lourdes one more time at here 91 age, enjoyed the stay very much, which was possible because of the level floor facilities.

Summer 2014
We all enjoyed a fabulous stay in the farmhouse in Caixon. The house is set in large grounds of its own giving a very relaxed and spacious feel to the place. The semi covered seating area and table outside were perfect for evening meals and due to the roof extending over half the courtyard we were even able to eat outside on the one occasion when it rained.
The lounge was extremely comfortable and the kitchen very well equipped, while all 4 bedrooms were comfortable and spacious.
This is the perfect house for a quiet retreat - Caixon is a very small and peaceful village. However the towns of Vic and Mauborget are not very far away if you need shops, restaurants and bars.
We were lucky that the house was close to two stages of the Tour de France in 2014, but as it's only around 40 miles from the Col du Tormalet, the tour will pass close by most years.
During our stay we were able to visit Pau, Lourdes, Carcassonne and even Pamplona in Spain, easily on day trips.
Finally, the owner is extremely helpful, providing lots of useful documents about the house, directions and local amenities and he was more than happy to field one or two e-mail queries I had about hiring bikes.
We would certainly recommend the place very highly and have in fact already booked for next year.

Beautiful, spacious, well equipped farmhouse
Wonderful part of the South of France if you're looking for a quiet relaxing break near the beautiful Pyrenees. We were visiting friends in the area and fortunately also found time to visit Lourdes, Pau and take the cable car and chair lift from pont d'espagne, cauterets to walk to the amazing lake and waterfalls in the Pyrenees. You definitely need a car to fully enjoy this area, particularly as Caixon is a pretty traditional French village, but has no shops - and a part of any French experience has to be daily freshly baked baguettes and croissants, just 5 minutes drive away! The farmhouse has bags of space and charm and contains everything you need to feel at home. You will also find plenty of reasonably priced restaurants only a short drive away. The orchard and courtyard are perfect for relaxing in the shade or sun. We would recommend a stay here, and hope to return.

What a fantastic time we all had.
We were really surprised to find such a lovely place not far from Lourdes and in the middle of a small village. I will recommend the villa to anyone. Just go once, you would want to return again.

Old World Charm at Au Paloque
Beautiful countryside location allows a respite from travelling while listening to roosters, ducks and town bells in the background. Very large, well kept home has all the modern comforts with the charm of a well kept, hundreds of years old building. Au Paloque is centrally located in south west France, making day trips to vineyards, beachside coast, mountains & major cities possible, not to mention the Spanish border.

Bucolic Bliss
My family stayed at the farmhouse last November and we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay in the South of France. The farmhouse is spacious with all the modern conveniences, just like in the pictures. What is not completely reflected in the pictures is the warm and homey feeling that you get when you return at the end of the day from exploring the surrounding areas including Lourdes. The caretakers Irene and Grant were simply wonderful too! Ever ready to swing by the farmhouse if necessary. As well, the neighboring town of Vic en Begorre has all that you'll need to make your stay complete. Their Saturday market is a delight!
But what will standout in our memory forever are the kind people who escorted us to the farmhouse when we arrived late at night after we lost our way from the long drive from Paris. Their generosity to a family of strangers simply disproves the stereotype. In truth, the townfolk in the South of France are some of the most warmest, kindest people you can ever meet.
It was such a great experience, we are going back in September!

Fantastic house, fantastic location
What an awesome week we spent in this amazing house. From the first impressions of cherry trees in the walled garden, to the secluded courtyard perfect for drinking wine in the afternoon, and the comfortable bedrooms and english television, the house was perfect for a week (or more) in the midi-pyrenees. Easy riding distance to many famous cols of the Tour de France (including the awesome Tourmalet) and easy visiting distance to the sights of Lourdes. Ian was full of helpful information, and the house was equipped with every convenience desired. Free wifi was available, and the many wine glasses certainly give clues to the regions wonderful wines! A five star experience, and I will certainly be back.
