"This is a lovely hotel, staff were great, food was fabulous. They have an excellent pastry chef. It’s a relaxed hotel in a quiet area. Very handy for travelling by car from Newcastle. One point, some rooms are directly above the function room and there was a wedding on when we were there. They lit fire pits which meant our room quickly filled with the smell of smoke. We had wanted our bedroom window open at night but couldn’t because of the fire pits, even when they moved them round the corner the smoke was still coming into the room. It’s also a bit noisy if you have a room above the function room as wedding guests came outside. However, the weddings stop at midnight so you can get to sleep after that. "

"The check in was fast and friendly, the room is lovely, with a nice view. There was quite a lot of noise from the street below early in the morning and the church bells were regular throughout the night. The breakfast was a good amount but lukewarm spolt the vibe. The price we paid , i think was high for this standard."

"We stayed at the Border Hotel for a couple of nights while walking St Cuthbert’s Way. The bath was a very welcome addition to the bathroom & we certainly made use of it during our stay. The bed was a little too soft & a bit lopsided but after our hikes we slept like logs anyway. This is a no frills hotel but it had everything we needed. Hearty food & a lovely friendly team. "
