The initial engagement on July 21, 1861 of what would become the First Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas) took place on McLean's farm in Manassas, Virginia. Union Army artillery fired at McLean's house, which was being used as a headquarters for Confederate Brigadier General P. G. T. Beauregard, and a cannonball dropped through the kitchen fireplace.

McLean was a retired major in the Virginia militia, but at 47, he was too old to return to active duty at the outbreak of the Civil War. In the spring of 1863, he and his family moved about 120 miles south to Appomattox County, Virginia, near a dusty, crossroads community called Appomattox Court House.

On April 9, 1865, the war revisited McLean. Confederate General Robert E. Lee was about to surrender to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant. He sent a messenger to Appomattox Court House to find a place to meet. On April 8, 1865, the messenger knocked on McLean's door and requested the use of his home, to which McLean reluctantly agreed. Lee surrendered to Grant in the parlor of McLean's house, effectively ending the Civil War. Later, McLean is supposed to have said "The war began in my front yard and ended in my front parlor."

"We stayed overnight for our son's 6th birthday. The location is so close to everything downtown and what a great novelty place to stay! The bed was super comfortable and the view was great! We wish it had not been so cold the night we stayed because we wanted to check out the firepit! If you are looking for a unique place to stay, this is a great choice!"

"Staying in this beautiful historic home was like staying with dear friends. It’s a lovely house in a great neighborhood. It was clean and inviting. Virgil was helpful and quick to respond to our questions. The beds were so comfortable that I slept as well as I do at home. We walked to great restaurants and all around the neighborhood and local park. We loved the front porch! We would definitely stay here again."

Not a hotel . . . Better!

"I dont know how I found this bed and breakfast on hotels.com but I'm so glad I did. It is a beautiful, historic home in a town already full of history. Lovely, themed rooms, beautiful outside gardens, and access to the common living spaces. We got an excellent breakfast in the morning as well. I would love to come back some day."

"The indoor pool was a great experience chilly getting in but a minute into it and the water was fine. There was also an outside patio with fire pit (unfortunately didn't get to try), but a great spot to chill out and relax with a good book!"
