Dry-stone walls are an integral feature of the Yorkshire Dales.  Whilst you will often see them being repaired it is more unusual to see a new one being built.
Here at Appletreewick I was fortunate to see a craftsman building this wall.  I could only admire his skill.  Whilst he finished the wall with a mortared coping, the wall itself is "dry".
Strip Lynchets in the sun. On a few of the low mounds of glacial moraines that were formed in this area after the last Ice Age, medieval man cut ploughing platforms to grow his crops. This was in turn given over to sheep which has helped preserve the evidence of these ancient farming methods.
