"Maria Cristina is undoubtedly a beautiful, characterful hotel. The Basque welcome from reception was really appreciated. We received a lovely glass of the local wine and the person who checked us in was so pleasant and helpful and that theme continued throughout. The reception and door staff couldn’t do enough. We had room 301. An upgrade from the garden view we had booked. A spacious room, very comfortable bed, Byredo products. On the downside there weren’t any tea / coffee making facilities!...

We were kindly upgraded (bc Gold Hotels.com member?) to a sea view room, which was lovely. Despite the rain getting in and soaking the carpet by the French windows (just an upkeep issue). Every room is designed so it is completely private, so you can have the curtains open on the entire glass wall in the bedroom and look out over the Bay of Biscay, and soak in the tub while inhaling the ocean air. You are practically outside. They really take care of you, here. They have a spa, and they are attached to the Akelarre Restaurant (3 Michelin stars) that started it all. "

"Overall the facilities are great on paper, however the management give a very clear impression and direction that the facilities are not to be used. It felt like being in school with some very strict and judgmental head teachers who monitored our every move. Having paid 310 euros per night, I expect to be able to feel at home and use the facilities that are advertised. I will not book again and could not in all good consciousness recommend this facility to anyone."
