"This was a great home-base for our short stay in Utrecht. It’s close to the train station (pro tip: you can cut through the mall instead of walking all the way around the block!), and we had the most amazing meal ever at SMAAK, which is conveniently situated in the alleyway directly behind the hotel. There’s a Starbucks right next door and a grocery store nearby, and it’s within walking distance of the canal district with all its shops and restaurants, and there’s a bike rental shop close by...

Rooms were comfortable and clean, food at the restaurant excellent, but the service was not attentive in the bar / dining area (staff often talking to each other and checking their phones rather than looking out for guests). When you had their attention, service was very friendly and helpful. Overall, better value than staying in Utrecht Central, but not as convenient...

"Reehorst is always friendly and reliable. I only stay here for work so I can't comment on anything other than the basics of checking in, out, quality of room, etc. The only thing I would say is that while breakfast is absolutely fine, it's expensive for what you get."

However, the policy of providing rooms, earlier than the stated check in time, for a separate charge per hour left a sour taste for me. I chose not to accept this rip-off deal. I am disappointed that Mercure have chosen to go down this ‘Ryanair-style” exploitation. A consequence, for me, was I deliberately chose not to spend any additional money in the hotel.
