Montacute House East Front It was about the time of the Spanish Armada in 1588 that Sir Edward Phelips, a successful lawyer and Speaker of the House of Commons, commissioned the building of Montacute House. It was probably local builder William Arnold who was given the task of creating Sir Edward's new home in the Somerset countryside. Arnold used local Ham Hill stone to create a symmetrical 'H' plan building owing much to the classical detail of the Renaissance style of architecture. There is a carved date of 1601 over the east doorway, probably denoting the year the house was completed. The Phelips family reigned supreme at Montacute for over three centuries, until the agricultural depression of the late C19 saw the last Phelips leave in 1911, and most of the house contents sold. The house was acquired by the National Trust in 1931. Montacute House is Grade I Listed.

"The hotel was clean, only downside is lots of flies in the restaurant area around the windows and in our room the paintwork was a bit shoddy. Tea and coffee was filled back up daily. Reception staff were friendly enough, as restaurant staff. Did witness one woman in particular who was bringing food out drop food on 3 guests and also some on the floor . We hadn't planned to go in the caves initially, as the hotel was a base more so for us, but we did in the end and they were good..would have been nice to have done an add on ticket at a reduced price as we were staying in the hotel though..i know you can do this whilst booking, but would've been nice to still have had it as an option. All in all avery pleasant place to stay."

"On arrival we were greeted in a polite cheerful manner, and shown to our room. The room and onsuit facilities were clean and tidy. The staff are friendly and approachable. The food was great, well presented and apatising. Overall a friendly welcoming establishment. We would definitely stay there again. "
