Historic Home
Excellent experience and this lodging was very quiet and clean - - away from the noise and hassle of the city. 1 minute walk to the subway station. Excellent for this trip - - easy access to the subway was a definite plus. Would highly recommend this lodging. The owner was very helpful and courteous.

Great place which met my needs perfectly. My room which was the least expensive was an amazing bargain. It IS very small but I was prepared for this having read other people's reviews. I wasn't there much so it was fine for a place to sleep and briefly hang out. The block MichaelNY is located on is absolutely gorgeous. The shared bathrooms weren't a problem in the least and I need a lot of time to get gorgeous in the morning. There's only 4 rooms and there are 2 shared bathrooms so there was never any competition for the bathrooms and I hardly ever saw the other guests. Michael offers a real bonus which is a common room downstairs with comfy chairs, a TV, and a kitchenette. He provides coffee, juice, cereal, milk, and everything needed for toast and guests can use the mini-fridge and microwave. This really made my life a lot more convenient. The street is very quiet and I slept like a baby at MichaelNY. The only issues I had were that I would often get back quite late at night and it takes forever to get all the way up there on the train, since after hours the train doesn't go express, and during the first week I stayed at MichaelNY the tub could've used a mid-week cleaning because one of the other guests was a very hirsute gentleman who shed while showering and neglected to wash away all the hairs he left in the tub. Otherwise the place was spotless. I would stay at MichaelNY and highly recommend it to others.

Apartment Hotel in Harlem
It was a good, safe, and comfortable stay. I had the largest room on the 2nd floor because I stayed there for a week. The guy Michael made sure I knew how to get there when I arrived to New York and was hospitable to me whenever I saw him. It was very close to the bus stop and train stations. I got to and from Columbia University in about 15 minutes everyday. I would recommend anyone to stay here.

It looked like a residence rather than a hotel. I Didn't like that the tv in the room was very small, it looked like it was 19 inchs. The heat in the room didnt work, so we had to use a plug in heater, and that barely worked. overall, it was a good location and place to stay at.

Great historic treat in nyc
I have worked and stayed in NYC for 30 years, and have never found anything like this. It's a small area that feels relatively untouched by the wrecking balls of progress. If you love historical buildings, this is a treat.

Great for a quick stay
Michael is a great host (as is his daughter, who helped out). I had the smallest room, which is really just a single bed in a tiny room. I was barely in the room because I was out touring the city, so this was all that I needed. The little laneway where the guest house is located (Sylvan Terrace) is adorable, and is located half a block from a C-train subway entrance. It's not the nicest neighbourhood in NYC, but it's perfectly fine - especially if you're used to traveling in big cities (and have basic street smarts). There is a great grocery store very nearby, and a subway line that will take you down to Times Square in 30-40 min. For those needing an affordable and clean place to hang your hat while touring NYC, this place is fantastic. I will definitely stay there again.

Great Place to Stay
My stay was great, I had no issues with anything other than the wifi never working. My room was clean and the air conditioning work well. The shared bathroom was also cleaned and I was provided with towels and soap & shampoo. The breakfast in the morning is pretty good, the owner provides a good variety of options and usually hangs around the kitchen in case you have any questions. The neighborhood is good and not dangerous at all, the subway is right around the corner along with a small market. Overall a great experience.

Convenient, safe, clean
The hotel itself is in the Washington Heights neighborhood, with Harlem directly to the south. It's a safe neighborhood, just take precaution when walking alone late at night. There is a subway entrance literally less than a minute away on foot. The hotel is secure and there is hardly ever any traffic on the street. The room was EXTREMELY small. I'm not complaining, all I need is a bed, but for those expecting anything bigger than a slightly oversized walk-in closet, I would look elsewhere. The bathroom is shared and clean. The host is nice and helpful. For smokers, there is no smoking in the building, around the building or on Sylvan Terrace street. You have to walk to either the corner of Sylvan and Jumel, or walk to the stairs that lead to St Nicholas. Overall, a good experience that was fairly priced considering the convenient location.

A friendly place to stay
This is the second time I stayed at Michael's guest house and certainly look forward to stay there on my next trip to NYC. Four guest rooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 full kitchen. The bed is comfortable and the place quiet. The guests have always been friendly and interesting. Michael is a nice and helpful host. Great for solo traveller or young couple. The place is located in a beautiful private street of historical houses and about 50 meters from the subway.

Convenient, clean, peaceful
A lovely place with exceptional host Michael, who greeted me at the door and helped me with my bag. A few rooms with shared bathroom. Stairs leading to very pleasant upstairs rooms. On a non-thru street. Very quiet, safe, peaceful. Birds are chirping outside in the morning! Subway is just at the corner, so convenient. Other guests are respectful and cordial. TV and a/c in bedroom. Fridge, microwave, coffee and tea, toaster, fruit, yogurt, juice, cereal etc in common room with TV, games, books, sitting area. All rooms are impeccably clean and inviting. I was delighted to stay here.

Good deal for Manhattan.
The architecture of the street is awesome. You won't believe finding a gem light that in that neighborhood. The rooms are very quiet, no traffic noise whatsoever, respectful guests. Bathrooms are very clean. Near from 2 subway lines Some little details could be improved though: longer bed, more comfortable chair-desk to work, and better bath towels.

They don't have private bathrooms
Everything was great except for the fact that hotels.com lie about the bathrooms!!! In the website they clearly state that the rooms have private bathrooms but once you get there, no, it's actually a shared bathroom and that was not cool.. Basically you pay for something and then you don't get it, so I was very unsatisfied about that

Friendly Hosts
Michael and his daughter are helpful with navigating NY, and flexible about check-in & check-out hours. Lots of amenities supplied, and upkeep is good. The place is near a major street, and the sirens and street noise carried quite a bit. A sleeping mask is a must since there are not black-out curtains. Since it's a historical home, floors aren't even and the stairs are high and narrow, so carrying heavy luggage up them can be a bit of a challenge. Supermarket and drugstore down the street, so it's fine to stay a few days.

MichaelNYC was a pretty good place to crash.
My trip was basically for a Christmas getaway and to see friends. Everything was clean and in order and all that I needed such as fruit stands, a laundromat, and transportation was literally half a block away. The Host, Michael, was very welcoming and I even got a chance to meet some people from Sweden and Italy. I had a good time and I hope to frequent his business again sometime next year.

Historic neighborhood.
The most interesting place I've ever stayed in in NYC. The street and the buildings are important historically as well as leading up to the Morris-Jummel Mansion.
