Matapouri beach is a long stretch of sand with clear turquoise water. Walk along the beach to the end then into the water to walk around a rocky outcropping to reach the last bit of beach. From there it’s a 20 minute walk up and over a hill to reach the Mermaid Pools. Deep blue tide pools that you can swim in, worth the extra work to get there.

"My partner and I and a couple of friends stayed at Bayhaven and it was a perfect getaway. The house was very nice and had everything we needed. The hosts are very generous! It was the perfect spot for swimming and kayaking and exploring the area. Highly recommend!!"

"This was a brilliant place for us to stay on a trip with three adult sisters and their kids. The set up of the rooms (the bunk room comes off one of the double rooms) works for family but means lots of traffic through that room. Two toilets is great. The yard is brilliant - lovely and private, nice to sit outside with a big group."

"The third 3 day stay of a 9 day holiday. The bach/chalet was well appointed, to a high standard, and suitable for couples. Set down a small track it is in a quiet location and is a good base to explore Whangarei heads and the adjacent coast. A pleasant and comfortable place for a long weekend."

Would love to make a suggestion to have some pedestal fans available to use at night for sleeping, it’s such a nice warm bach but unbearable for sleep…….we wished we’d brought our own fans. Also Bachcare sent us the wrong lockbox code but we’re lucky they answered the phone with the first call and rectified the problem. Thankyou to the owners for renting out their home so people like us can have a summer holiday at the best location!!"

"Hi,I phoned during our stay about the state of 82 Sandy Bay Farms road. The biggest concern was the smell of the water from the faucets, especially in the showers and baths. The water had a significant sewage smell to it. It lingered on all of us after we've been through a shower or a bath. The exterior of the house was also dirty. "The cottage was extremely clean and tidy, and very well appointed. Little things, like extra tea towels and toilet paper in the drawers, really made it feel like a home away from home. There was a small amount of road noise during the day, but the landscaping made any traffic invisible. It was so nice to sit in the sun, surrounded by garden. An oasis in our busy week! "
