There was nothing not to like. It was a wonderful property in the "middle" of
Joburg that removes you from the city. The staff was wonderful as was the food. The rooms were great! The only disappointment was we didn't stay there longer. We will definitely stay there next time on our next visit to Joburg!
The place was beautiful, cozy, as if I were at home. Jeanette was great. She took care of everything and was worried for us to have a great experience. She recommended us were to have dinner and was perfect.
The restaurant at Idwala was delicious.
My kids loved the garden.
Definitely will go again! Totally recommendable.
Amazing hotel hidden amongst the suburbs of Darrenwood near Cresta in NW Jo’burg. Once you step through the gates you forget that you're in a major city and you're standing in a serene surrounding of thatched roof houses listening to the trill of a grey lourie (the "go-away!" bird). The main building opens to large seating area and bar and leads straight onto the dining room under an impressive vaulted thatched roof and rustic stone fireplace. Outside there’s a built in seating area with firepit and a small pool however as it was autumn I resisted the urge to jump in.
I was staying in one of the large separate huts away from the main hotel which are divided into 2 rooms, and this was a well-appointed room with king sized bed, TV with DStv inc M-Net Movies, and a fabulous shower and bath. I can highly recommend these huts as they are well sized, quiet and in a lovely floral part of the site.
Breakfast is definitely not to be missed as the chef Paul is a master at poached eggs and creates an extremely tasty muesli with creamy yoghurt and fresh seasonal fruit. I did not get a chance to try the dinner menu but it looked fantastic. The info book in the rooms also provides a list of local restaurants which have received good reviews from previous guests which is really helpful if you’re looking to go out and eat and don’t know where to go.
I would definitely stay here again when I’m next in Jo’burg.
I could not have imagined a better place to call home than the Olive Cottage at Idwala for my first visit to South Africa. The hospitality that I experienced by virtue of Idwala’s charming and attentive proprietor and her first-class staff made me feel truly welcomed and cared for—especially as a guest traveling solo during the first part of my stay. The entire staff looked after me like family, and Chef Paul, Maria, and Patty treated me like a long-lost friend during my stay. That hospitality is a reflection of the whole spirit of Idwala and symbolic of Johannesburg overall. To run an establishment so well certainly requires constant attention to every detail, so it was great to feel that my comfort and accommodations at any time were so equally important. I will no doubt return to Idwala on my next visit to Johannesburg. Thank you for creating a home away from home for me in Johannesburg.
Good for Family Vacation but not for Business Trip
My stay was a mixture of business and family. For relaxation and family the room I was in was fantastic but for business is it lacking in the sense that it does not provide a working desk and working chair. Instead of a working desk and chair, it provides a bar type of sitting. Although my room came with free wifi, I could not utilise it for research as I would not work on my documents. As a result, I could not draft the documents, I had planned to draft.
Lovely place to go see and stay. Rooms were excellent with an amazing bath and shower. Relaxing was easy.
Food was great and the staff were brill. Their "pool" is a bit of a misnomer, unless you're tiny or I missed the actually swimming pool. The out-door fires are highly romantic and well worth spending time around.
The only thing for us was the general lack of mobility accessibility. Wheelchair user, avoid. Simple as that. Crutches / walking,if you can do a few stairs, yeah, give it a go, though note the lack of any kind of hand rail on the main entrance.
