Goree island, Senegal.

From the 15th to the 19th century, it was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast. Ruled in succession by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French, its architecture is characterized by the contrast between the grim slave-quarters and the elegant houses of the slave traders. Today it continues to serve as a reminder of human exploitation and as a sanctuary for reconciliation.

"I had to clean the room myself, and bedding were offered to be changed only once in the week. Water in the bathroom strangely stopped and led to usage of a bucket instead. Insects were found in the bathroom and the manager explained it was because he has put a pesticide, so it was normal. All this in top of paying the bill for hydro used in the room (information provided after the room is rented and this is non refundable. "I was due to spend 2 weeks with my Gambian partner but due to unfortunate circumstances she was not able to come. The language was slightly difficult as I do not speak French or wolof, but the friendliness of the local people made sure I had a great time. "

"The house was under construction, and the manager told me it was live on internet by mistake. But was it really? He said he hasn’t received the payment and thus couldn’t make a refund. I had to clean the bathroom my self (buying bleach at grocery store) as it was beyond bearable. "My stay at Azalail Hotel Dakar was exceptional! The staff was warm and welcoming, the room was clean and cozy, and the location was very convenient. But what really stood out was the amazing food,every meal was flavorful, fresh, and beautifully presented. Whether it was breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the dining experience exceeded my expectations. "Comfortable room, great location and view at a reasonable price. Most of the amenities (such as the restaurant and bar) are next door, but it’s about a 20 foot walk so not much of an imposition. I especially appreciated the layout of the elevators. They opened into a waiting area and you walk out of that to find the rooms. This cuts down a ton on noise from people walking out of the elevator and taking a minute to reduce the volume of their conversation. This isn’t a 5-star hotel, but I’m giving it five stars because it fulfilled expectations"

"Great quality price ratio. It was conveniently next to an excellent brunch restaurant and very close to the lighthouse restaurant for dinner. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The road leading up to the building is not paved due to ongoing construction and unclearly marked on google maps but this is a minor issue. "
