Insecure, bad roads every way you go
Safe city
Area near consulate feels safe. All hotel and restaurant employees are very welcoming. As a foreign visitor, in other areas (like the Cathedral/Centro area) you get a lot of attention in a negative/uncomfortable way.
It's on the record to be relatively unsafe and everyone I met warns against going alone. I enjoyed myself, kept my activities very basic, but enjoyed myself without incident
I would not pick this place for a leisure trip, I just simply had to go to the US Consulate.
