I was only there for a quick overnight, so can't speak much to the overall area. But taking the shuttle back to the airport got me lined up to take the national express bus on into London. I was the only passenger on that early morning bus, so nice!
Only was in hotel and airport. That was good.
The people were friendly. Any questions about places to go for dinner or watch a sports match people were willing to point you in the right direction

OK - we were just passing through on the way to Cambridge. It is a little hard to find the hotel - it is very rural and some of the roads on the map don't actually exist. Very convenient for Stansted
Would prefer town over motorway services area.
