The first segment of track to be rehabilitated following the declaration of the Ecuadorian Railways as a national heritage, the journey from Quito south towards the great colossus of Cotopaxi has been running since 2009. It remains one of the most beautiful and memorable in the country.
The journey begins at the historic train station of Chimbacalle, whose history dates back to when the Guayaquil to Quito railway was finally completed in 1908. Here, amid this friendly neighbourhood – a mix of residential homes and businesses – the train sets off for its route southwards along the famous ‘Avenue of the Volcanoes’, thus named by the great Prussian explorer, Alexander Von Humboldt.

"We stayed at a one bedroom apartment facing east. This unit was on the 23rd floor and though it was high from the ground the noise of the city was loud. For a moment I felt I was in New York as the near by Atahualpa Stadium was testing the sound for a local concert. The other thing I noticed was that it gets hot in the morning if you don’t lower the window treatments. And one minus was that there is no dryer in the unit. "The communication between the owner and myself was amazing! The amenities that were included really made my stay even better. Best part, security guard is always in the lobby and are friendly! The location of this apartment is great. It is nearby restaurants and Supermax. Need to add we were able to see a live concert from the roof top. The scenery from the apartment was beautiful."

"W spent three nights in this apartment. The view alone was worth the nightly price. There are a couple of delightful restaurants across the street with delicious food and nightly atmosphere. The managers of the property we attentive and available. We did have limited wifi due to the number of apartments sharing the router, but they accommodated my essential needs. The neighborhood is relatively peaceful and certainly safe. "

"The location across from parque la Carolina and the property were what we had been looking for. Security and lobby area were managed well. The condo unit had an ideal view of the area. Our only issue was that it was dirty around floors. It appeared to have had a party before us and not cleaned well."

"Carolina Park across the road was great for walking and exercise, full of attractions for family fun. The Botanic gardens was lovely outing, beautiful, interesting display of native and exotic flora and a10 min. Walk across the street. The staff were not only courteous and efficient, they went out of their way to accommodate my every need unexpectedly as I don’t speak Spanish. Thankfully several of them did. The hotel is a few minutes walk to the metro which takes you to many tourist attractions, most of the places you will want to see around the city in just a few minutes. Great spot and you won’t be sorry to stay. As a sole traveller, I ate at the hotel every night and breakfast. The breakfast buffet was extensive, with many healthy options available and the dinner menu was very good, nicely presented by the chef. AND the best margaritas I have had in Quito by far. Would happily revisit!"

We go to Quito a lot, and we usually stay at a different hotel. Because of scheduling, we ended up trying this hotel instead. Hotel Reina Isabel is our new go to hotel."
